emotions better. Perhaps, that’s what explains the keenness with which we share music on social media sites like Facebook. Come the special occasion and you know that there’s a song out there for it. The airwaves made it so easier to dedicate songs to family, friends, and the betrothed…all with just a call to the radio or television station. The web seems to come off second best here. Could it be that sharing is not so rare anymore? Could it be that there’s no audience for that special dedication? It’s a bit difficult to narrow it down, but here are three avenues you can try out to dedicate a song to the special someone.

Postcard.fm

Postcard.fm is a simple service that helps you send audio postcards, or let’s call them MP3 postcards to friends via email. There are a couple of good things about such a service. Firstly, you don’t have to go through a cluttered ad-ridden e-card website. Secondly, you don’t have to register before uploading a photo or a MP3 file (maximum size is 20MB) to use as a dedicated greeting. If it’s just a photo, you can upload one or paste in a URL. The best way is to send a nice picture with a song, and a special message. You can also send your song dedications to multiple people at the same time.

ShoutOut Radio (iOS)

ShoutOut Radio is a free app for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. An Android app is expected to be announced soon. The app was born out of a Kickstarter campaign and there is a really a simple thought behind it. You start by picking a song from the many you have on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Alternatively, you can choose from a cloud-based catalog of millions of song samples. Pick one or more of your Facebook friends to dedicate the song to, attach an optional text message, and set the song to be made private or public. The recipient does not need to have the app as they receive the dedication on their walls via ShoutOut Radio. Yes, the samples will play only as long as they are (30 – 40 seconds), but the whole point is about getting your message across. You can also try out Song Dedicate which is a similar iOS app. Song Dedicate also allows you to add a picture to go with your message. These two methods are the neatest and the simplest ways I could find to dedicate a special song. Oh, there are other ways also, like taking the usual e-card route, but I discounted them for they are too run of the mill. But the comments remain open for other suggestions. Send them forth!
