Well, it would appear that you are typing really fast, but the text is not appearing on the screen in real-time. Sometimes, there is a lag or delay of a split second or more. That can disrupt your train of thought and lead to unwanted annoyance. Let’s find out what we can do about it.

1. Reboot and Reconnect

Using an external keyboard to type? I would suggest a quick reboot after saving your work and reconnecting the keyboard once. This simple little trick worked for me once. Won’t take more than a few moments. The same advice goes for wireless keyboard users. I would also suggest you check batteries.

2. Different Keyboard

Try a different keyboard if you have a spare one lying around to ensure that there is nothing wrong with the one you are using. You can also use the current keyboard on a different computer to check if it is a software or hardware related issue.

3. Turn Off Filter Keys

Step 1: Search for Filter keys in the Start menu or Settings and open it. Step 2: Toggle off Filter keys.

4. Character Repeat Rate

Some users found success after maxing out the character repeat rate. Here’s how to do that. Step 1: Press Windows key+R shortcut to open Run dialog box and type control keyboard before hitting Enter. Step 2: Set the Repeat rate bar to the max and save settings.

5. Troubleshooter

Windows 10 comes with a built-in troubleshooter that can help with a number of common errors and bugs. Step 1: Press Windows key+I shortcut to open Settings and search for ‘Find and fix keyboard problems’. Step 2: Select Apply repairs automatically in the pop-up that follows and click on Next. You will then simply follow on-screen instructions after that. There used to be another option in the troubleshooting menu for ‘hardware and devices,’ but Microsoft has removed it. You can still access it from the Command Prompt. Step 1: Search for and open the Command Prompt from the Start menu with admin rights by clicking Run as administrator. Step 2: Give the below command after which you will view a pop-up similar to the one we saw above. Step 3: Follow the on-screen instructions and check if you still notice keyboard lag on your Windows 10 computer.

6. Check Drivers

There are three things you can check out. Try rolling back the drivers to an older version, updating the drivers to the latest version, and finally reinstalling them. We have written a detailed guide on Windows drivers for you already.

7. New User Profile

Creating a new Windows user profile might help. If you have a different profile already, switch to it from the Start menu to check if the keyboard is still lagging on your computer. You can quickly create a new one too. Step 1: Press Windows key+I to open Settings again and go to Accounts > Family & other users. Click on ‘Add someone else to this PC’ option. Step 2: Click on ‘I don’t have this person’s sign-in information’. Step 3: Click on ‘Add a user without a Microsoft account’ and then follow the on-screen instructions. You just created a guest account. It is easy to turn a guest account into an admin account later. Check if you continue to face lags while typing with the keyboard.

8. Run DISM Command

The DISM command is primarily used first to mount and then service a Windows image. It can help fix several different kinds of errors and bugs. Step 1: Open Command Prompt again from the Start menu with admin rights. Step 2: Give the below commands but one at a time. Wait a few moments in-between.

Keys on the Board

The keyboard is one of the most important accessories you own. Most of us don’t even pay attention to it or realize its importance until it stops working. That’s when we understand just how much we really depend on it. There is also an option of the on-screen keyboard, but that’s really slow to work with and useful in emergencies. Also, that option is only practical on touch screen computers like a tablet or laptop. Let us know in the comments below whether we were able to help fix the issue. If you found another way, do share it with us. It should help some of our other readers. Next up: Looking to buy a new pair of wireless mouse and keyboard combo?
