I figured many wouldn’t want to get distracted by Rediscover This Day cards and notifications as well. Quite possible that you don’t want any reminders of certain grave events either, and hence, you may wish to disable them. Thankfully, it’s easy to do that. Let me show you how to go about turning off Rediscover This Day on the Google Photos web app, as well as on Android and iOS.
Turn Off Cards and Notifications
Whether you are using Google Photos on desktop, Android, or iOS, you can readily turn off both Rediscover This Day cards and notifications using either of the methods below. Regardless of platform, any changes you make will get synced across all your devices, so you don’t have to repeat the procedure everywhere.
1. Disable via Assistant Tab
Within the Assistant tab in Google Photos, locate a Rediscover This Day card. Next, click or tap the vertical ellipsis (three-dot) icon to the lower-right corner of the card. On the menu that shows up, tap Turn Off Rediscover This Day. That’s it. You will no longer see Rediscover This Day cards in the Google Photos Assistant any longer. You also won’t be bothered by Rediscover This Day notifications either.
2. Disable via Settings Panel
If you don’t see a Rediscover This Day card within the Google Photos Assistant, don’t worry. You can still disable Rediscover This Day cards and notifications with a brief dive into the Google Photos Settings panel. Step 1: Click the hamburger menu icon that appears to the upper-left corner of the Google Photos web app or mobile app. Step 2: On the menu that shows up, click on Settings. Step 3: Click or tap the option labeled Assistant Cards. Step 4: Turn off the switch next to Rediscover This Day. Both Rediscover This Day cards and notifications are disabled after that. If you want to turn them on later, head back into the Google Photos Settings panel, click on Assistant Cards, and then flick the switch next to Rediscover This Day.
Turn Off Notifications Only
If you don’t want to lose out on Rediscover This Day cards in the Google Photos Assistant, then consider disabling notifications to make it less distracting. However, there are no specific controls that will help you only switch off Rediscover This Day notifications. So to get rid of them, you need to turn off all Google Photos notifications. The Google Photos app on Android does offer a certain degree of flexibility, but you will still have to turn off all Assistant cards. If you don’t mind losing out on other Google Photos notifications as well, then let’s see how you can go about turning them off.
Google Photos – Desktop
Step 1: Open the Google Photos menu, and then click Settings. Step 2: Scroll down the Settings panel, and then turn off the switch next to Browser Notifications.
Google Photos – Android
Step 1: Open the Google Photos menu, tap Settings, and then tap Notifications. Step 2: Tap Notification Settings On This Device, and then turn off the switch next to Assistant on the subsequent screen.
Google Photos – iOS
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad. Next, scroll down and tap on Google Photos. Step 2: Tap Notifications, and then turn off the switch next to Allow Notifications.
No Thanks, Google
Don’t get me wrong — I enjoy messing around with Rediscover This Day cards to see what I was up to years ago. But the feature distracts and pops memories that are best left unremembered. I won’t use the functionality anytime soon. So, what was your reason for turning them off? Or did you end up keeping them around and disabling just the notifications?
