Whenever I asked it anything, it would show me the expected results on the screen, however, there was no voice output. Bummer for a voice-based smart assistant, right? Initially, I laughed it off as a one-off issue, as I was getting the results in the written form. However, when I noticed it happening almost every time I called for the Assistant, it piqued my curiosity. So the next thing was pretty obvious, to fish for the solution. The solution that we are presenting here is tried and tested … and it works!

1. Check Media Volume

So, here’s what I did initially. Though it’s a bit obvious, check the media volume on your phone. At times, when you’re watching a video during office hours, most of us often lower the volume and it tends to stay that way. If that’s not the case with you, you can skip directly skip to the next one. If not, just crank up the sound.

2. Retrain Voice Model

A corrupted voice model may be one of the reasons for the Google Assistant working half-heartedly on your phone. The good news is that you can easily retrain the voice model. Head over to the Google Assistant settings page by tapping on the blue button at the top-right corner. Once there, hit the three-dot menu > Settings > Devices > Voice model and tap on Delete voice model. Now all you need to do is enable the ‘Ok Google’ detection and retrain the voice model. However, do make sure that you are doing it in a noise-free place.

3. Check Google’s Text-to-speech Engine

Google’s text-to-speech is the tool that permits apps to speak to you. In fact, it’s one of those apps that make your Android phone powerful. Though the app comes installed on almost every Android phone, you may want to check if it has been uninstalled accidentally. To confirm, head over to Settings > Additional settings > Language & Input and scroll down to the Speech section. Having done that, tap on the Text-to-speech output option and you should see the Google Text-to-speech Engine as the default app there. If you don’t see it there, head over to the Google Play Store and install the app.

4. Download Language Packs

The final step would be to check for the default language packs on your Xiaomi phone. Go to the Text-to-speech output section, which we saw on the step above, and tap on the cog (gear) icon. Tap on Language, scroll down and select English(United States). Once done, tap on the option that says Install voice data. This will let you choose the voice set for the Google Assistant. Now, all you need to do is tap on the Voice set option and select the one as per your preference. Once the download completes, just say ‘Ok Google’ and voila! You should be able to hear the Google Assistant loud and clear.

Hey, Google!

So, this is how you can fix the audio issue with the Google Assistant on Xiaomi phones running MIUI 9. Given that voice-controlled smart assistants are so popular on Android phones, it’s natural that you’d want to get the most out of it. While you are fixing this issue, don’t forget to clean the dirt build-up on your Android’s microphone.
