The flagship killer, One Plus 3, faces the same problem with its whopping 6 gigs of RAM. Games and apps won’t remain in the memory as it fills up gradually. However, there’s a hack that you can apply on a rooted OnePlus 3 to utilize full 6 GB of memory. So, here I’d like to show you how you can select when your device should start cleaning up memory. Thus, speeding up your device and making it more responsive as the memory cleaning will be suspended for some time. But, before using the app I recommend you get some knowledge of what the app will do on your Android system.

What is Swappiness?

One of the memory cleaning operation that is performed on RAM is Swapping. What it actually does is that it swaps the data (apps) from the RAM to a portion of your device that is designated for Virtual Memory. This is triggered only when the RAM reaches a certain value. The operation is slow and can make your device laggy and unresponsive. In your case, the Android system Swappiness value will be set 60. Which means the swapping of RAM will be triggered when it’s half full. So, the app that we’ll use here will help you to reduce this swappiness value. The apps will remain in memory for a longer time as the cleaning operation (swapping) will not be triggered until it reaches the designated value. Thus, it will speed up your device as this operation will not be performed and also you’ll get to keep more apps in the memory.

How to Reduce Swappiness Value?

If you have enough knowledge of init.d scripting on Android then you can do it manually and also set different parameters to your liking. However, the app we’ll use here does it automatically for us in the root files. The app is called Speed Up Swap. And all you have to do is simply select how you want your device to perform. Initially, it will show you how your device is performing at its current state. At Very Slow the swappinessvalue is 60, at slow: 40, fast: 20, and very fast: 0. At Very Fast the swapping will be performed when the memory is totally full. I don’t recommend to switch to Very Fast. Instead, I suggest you stay at Slow and when you think you need to do some heavy multitasking then switch to Fast. The app also shows the commands that it performs in the form of Toast. You can see the Swappiness value being changed. And yes, don’t forget to hit Done and reboot your phone. You’ll experience the speediness after the reboot. Also, try putting more apps in memory and test out which profile suits you.

It Has its Downsides

Well, more the memory in use, more will be the battery drain. The apps in the memory also have their processes running in the background. Thus making use of the CPU. So, this trick does speed up your device and lets you use the memory to its full extent but you have to deal with battery drain. In my usage, I did get battery drain but not a heavy one.
