While Focus is still a new kid in the town, QuickPic provided an amazing interface with a lot of features and that too without any ads. However, the app was recently bought by Cheetah Mobile and from what I know, they don’t have a great reputation in the market. They have managed to piss many users off with the apps that bombard phone with ads and other unnecessary crapware. I was shocked to see that others have even created a petition to ban Cheetah Mobile from Google Play Store. The Cheetah mobile team however has reached out the each of the users individually on the Play Store and assured that the app will not be loaded with ads and will continue to function the way it was designed to. In fact, they promised to bring additional new features now that they have taken over the app development. But you never know, things can go great or become worse. Just so that you are prepared, I am going to talk about a new Photo Management app for Android that is loaded with features just like QuickPic.
Piktures Gallery Photo & Video
The name of the app is Piktures and before we begin to talk about it, I would recommend to go ahead and install it from the Play Store. After you install and initialize the app, you will be able to see all the photos and videos saved on your phone. Just tap on any of them and slide to navigate, simple and easy. So that was the overview, let me talk about some of the app’s interesting features that makes it cool.
Different Views to Browse the Photos
The app provides three different views to help you browse through the photos. The first one is the Album View which can be loaded from the left sidebar. The app treats each folder you have photos in as a separate album and tapping on it will open up the complete folder in the main view. The second option is to browse photos based on the location tagged with GPS. Slide the right-sidebar and you will get the list of places you have shot photos in. Tapping on any of these markers will load the photos taken in the particular location. Finally, we have the Calendar view. Tap on the Calendar icon at the top to bring it up and you will see the photo thumbnails on a calendar. You can mix and match two views to get to your photos faster. Let’s say you wish to find a photo you took in Bangalore on the 20th of August. First open the location view to select Bangalore and then select the dates from the calendar view. Really interesting features, especially when you have thousands of photos stored on your device.
Set Cover for the Albums and Change Grid View
On every album view, you get a cover on the top with parallax effect. By tapping on the photo, the cover can be changed easily with any of the photos on your device. You can blur and crop the photos before applying it. The parallax effect looks cool, but can be disabled from the Piktures settings from the three-dot menu. You also have the option to get a 4 or a 5 column grid to browse more photos than the default 3 column view and can also set brightness to maximum when viewing photos.
Compress Photos and Remove GPS Coordinates before Sharing
For me, this is probably the coolest feature of all. When you tap on the share option on any of the photos, you get the option to resize it and even remove the GPS details before sharing it. This ensures your privacy is maintained and you save on your bandwidth. The popup box to resize the photo or remove the GPS location will not always popup and the photo needs to be of a higher resolution along with the GPS data.
Sort and Hide Albums
As we already know, the app automatically makes any folder with pictures an album in the app. While the feature is cool, you get a lot of unnecessary albums in your app. For example, the folder that stores screenshot doesn’t look great in the Gallery and Piktures gives an option to hide them. In the album view, tap on the edit icon and hide the albums you don’t wish to see in the app. The album along with all its contents will be hidden from the main view where you browse all the photos. So that was Piktures, an interesting new Gallery app for Android and probably a strong QuickPic alternative. I understand that it still falls short of features when compared to the latter, but it’s still in its early stages of development.
