The brainchild of 19-year-old Michael Vaga, the HandEnergy charges by simple rotation of the hand. The device was first conceptualised in August 2014, and the first prototype was ready by October 2015. The device is fitted with a gyroscope which produces energy when you rotate the device, and this energy can be used immediately or stored for future use. The rotor inside the device gains momentum with each additional spin and produces more power — going up to 5000 RPM on an average. “We can’t imagine our lives without mobile devices, and all of them need to be charged. We want to help people to be independent of the power grid, or at least to have an emergency source of energy. We are passionate about producing clean energy and HandEnergy is our contribution,” company states on its Kickstarter page. HandEnergy then converts the mechanical energy produced by the rotations into electrical energy, which can be then used to charge devices such as smartphones, ebooks, speakers, smartwatch and more. The device takes roughly 40 minutes to an hour to fully charge its 1000 mAh batteries, but the charging speed is reduced by 30 percent if a phone is being charged at the same time. It has a 5V 1A USB output, a battery level indicator as well as a Bluetooth module to connect with the HandEnergy app, which allows users to track the charge generation as well as share it with their friends. The Kickstarter campaign for HandEnergy was started in November 2016 and the company expects to ship the product by May 2017. You can order your own HandEnergy portable charger here.
