It’s been a few days since I’ve been using the EUI 5.8 on the Le Max 2 and the Le 2 and it has been stable with all the new features working perfectly fine. So let’s take a look at them.
1. Fingerprint App Lock
This is one of the most awaited features on the EUI ever since the launch of Le 1s in India. Le 2 and Le Max 2 users can now lock the apps using fingerprint sensor on their devices without using a 3rd party app. As the feature is integrated with the EUI, it is more convenient than installing external apps. To enable the feature, you must have at least one fingerprint registered on the device. Next, you need to navigate to System settings –> Fingerprint & password and then select the option App lock. You will then have to activate the feature and give a separate PIN or Pattern lock. Please note that this password can be different from the device lock screen password. Once that’s done, you will be asked to select the app you need to lock and all you need to do is turn on the switch. That’s all. Next time you try to launch the locked apps, you will be shown the PIN or pattern screen depending on your choice. However, the registered fingerprint will equally work to unlock the apps. These apps will also be protected in the Recent apps menu which makes your data completely secure.
2. Music Player with Sort and Equalizer
The Music Player now has new looks and you can sort your music into different categories. Plus, it is now so easy to search for local music. If you have the lyrics file saved under the same name, you can even get the lyrics while listening to these songs. Well, the cosmetic touches are there, but the biggest change in the app is the introduction of the equalizer. You can select from 10 preset equalizers, increase Bass Boost, surround sound or go manual and configure all those values. Some features, like the Bass Boost, are only available when you have the headphones connected.
3. Dolby Mode for CDLA Earphones
While testing the equalizer, I realized that it only works with earphones when you have non-CDLA headset plugged in. For CDLA earphones, there is something called as CDLA experience that automatically configures the music output digitally to suit best with the beats. The settings are located in Sound & vibration settings. You can also enable Dolby Atoms which makes the experience even better. However, the thing to note here is that CDLA headphones are required to activate these features and it will drain the excessive battery when turned on; which is kind of an issue because that’s the only port used for charging the device as well. Also, the feature is universal so will also work with 3rd party music streaming services like Wynk and Spotify.
4. All New Phone Manager with App Warehouse
You now get a phone manager using which you can do so much more on your device. You can clean junk files, control data usage and also get app warehouse. The power management also houses a lot of interesting tricks. While all the other features are self-explanatory, I think App Warehouse might need a bit of explanation. Using this module you can disable the apps that you want to retain (don’t want to uninstall) but do not plan to use them for a long time. This way, you can keep the app in the storage, but at the same time enhance the system performance. A nifty little feature if you think about it.
5. Built-in Firewall for Apps
With EUI 5.8 you get the option of Connection control in Data usage control. Here you get the option to disable mobile data or Wi-Fi on any app installed on your phone. So let’s say you wish to limit data usage of a game to only Wi-Fi and not on 3G cellular data, you just need to disable the mobile data for the particular app and that’s all. For Wi-Fi, just flip the settings. You also get the option to set monthly data limit and also get daily data traffic reminder.
Some Nifty Improvements
Apart from all these major updates, there are some nifty fixes and updates like dialpad and virtual buttons vibration effect is stronger. You no longer get duplicate icons after updating apps from the Play Store. Also, the badly needed fix for camera bug has also been implemented (due to which user was unable to take click photo when the device temperature was high).
Conclusion
So those were the top 5 features in the EUI 5.8 on Le Eco Le 2 and Le Max 2. The update is still to roll out for older devices like Le 1s and Le Max, however, few features like CDLA Dolby mode might be missing. So if you own a Le 2 or a Le Max 2, update your devices today and let us know what you think about the new features. From what I feel, it still lacks when compared to MIUI, but then EUI is pretty new and has come a long way in a very short span of time.
