So, it seems only fair that we pit both the devices against each other and see which one has better worth for your money. Both the Redmi 4 and 4A pack a 5-inche display and run MIUI8 on top of Android Marshmallow. Plus, both the devices support VoLTE and have the same camera specs as well. So what’s the difference? Well, there are quite a handful of them when you look under the hood (and above, as well). So, let’s quickly roundup and see the key differences of the Xiaomi Redmi 4 and Redmi 4A.

Design

It’s the design of the Redmi 4 that gives this budget phone a premium look. Gone are the typical Xiaomi Redmi designs, instead you get a sleek metal and glass device with 2.5 D curved glass and rounded corners. What’s more, the camera hump is almost negligible and the fingerprint sensor is equally sleek. Overall, the Redmi 4 weighs just about 156 grams and feels just about right in your hands. On the other hand, the Redmi 4A has a slightly underwhelming look. You get the usual Redmi designs with squarish corners and no curves at the edges, which gives it a run-of-the-mill look. Overall, the Redmi 4A weighs roughly 132 grams and feels a bit slippery owing to the polycarbonate finish on its body. Plus the speaker grills of the Redmi 4A are placed at the rear of the device, which might pose a bit of a problem if you place it on a bed or on any material which absorbs sound. Speaking of the Redmi 4, the speakers are aesthetically placed at the bottom of the device. So unless the Redmi 4 learns to stand on its feet, one should have no problem of sound muffling at all.

Display

Moving on, both the devices sport 5-inch HD display which produces bright and vibrant colors. However, the Redmi 4A pales in comparison to the Redmi4 — the colors aren’t that bright. On the left, we have the Redmi 4 and the Redmi 4A is on the right. And this extends to the look of the icons as well. The icons look a tad hazy and the sharpness is missing.

Hardware

The Redmi 4 is powered by Qualcomm’s octa-core Snapdragon 435 SoC which clocks at 1.4 GHz. The Redmi 4A, on the other hand, is powered by Qualcomm’s quad-core Snapdragon 425 SoC and clocks at 1.4 GHz. As obvious, the Redmi 4 delivers a better performance. The Antutu benchmark tool scored a rating of 43917 for the Redmi 4 while it clocked 35349 for the Redmi 4A.

Fingerprint sensor

Aforementioned, the Redmi 4 packs in a sleek fingerprint sensor at the rear and it does quite an awesome job of reading your prints. Sadly, this whole aspect is missing in the Redmi 4A. Though pattern and PIN locks help in protecting your phone diligently, but then, it’s quite easy to unlock a phone with the new biometric security measures. So, in this case, the Redmi 4 scores a point over the Redmi 4A.

Camera

Moving on, the Xiaomi Redmi 4 and Redmi 4A sport the same camera specs. The rear camera is of 13-megapixel with f/2.2 aperture coupled with autofocus and LED flash. The front camera setup is of 5-megapixel with an aperture value of f/2.2. In daylight, the shots come out to be crisp and vivid and the HDR shots are even better. The above pictures should help you understand the difference in both the camera, which is very minuscule. But yeah, the color reproduction of the Xiaomi Redmi 4 is much better.

Battery

Surely, the battery is the most important aspect of any smartphone. Even premium smartphones can be crippled by low-performing batteries. Thankfully, both the phones are well equipped to see you through the day. The Redmi 4 is powered by a 4100mAh battery unit while the Redmi 4A boasts of a relatively lower battery unit of 3100mAh. This difference ultimately boils down to the charging time. The Redmi 4 — owing to its huge battery unit — takes at least four hours to charge and the Redmi 4A charges to full capacity in roughly two hours.

Storage and Memory

The Xiaomi Redmi 4A comes with 2GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage expandable via microSD card up to 128GB. The Redmi 4 offers better options for it has three variants —

2 GB RAM with 16 GB of internal storage3 GB RAM with 32 GB of internal storage4 GB RAM with 64 GB of internal storage

Pricing

Price is the most important factor when it comes to buying a smartphone. The Redmi 4 starts at the price of INR 6,999 for the 16 GB variant, the Redmi 4A is priced at INR 5,999 for the same. The 3GB+32GB variant comes for Rs.8,999 and the 4GB+64GB variant costs Rs.10,999.

Final Say

With the difference of just a thousand bucks, the Xiaomi Redmi 4 is the ideal choice with a great battery life, an impressive design, and a decent camera. But at the end of the day, the choice is ultimately yours. But if you ask me, I would rather go for the Xiaomi Redmi 4, instead of the 4A.
